Volleyball Falls at Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 3-0 on Thursday at the UVU PE Building.
 
The Wolverines (12-11, 6-2 WAC) won the first set 25-8, the second set 25-17, and the third set 25-19.
 
Sophomore Haley Durham led the Broncs (11-12, 1-6 WAC) with six kills and three blocks. Freshman Alisha Watson also had six blocks to go with eight digs. Senior Nycole Masaki registered 23 assists. Junior Shanice Faison had 12 digs.
 
Katie Fritzler led the Wolverines with 10 kills and four blocks. Lauren Stringham also had four blocks. Brookelyn Hall recorded 32 assists. McKenna Tait had 17 digs.
 
With the Wolverines up 2-1 in the first set, Stringham and Wilden combined for five-straight kills to help the Wolverines jump out to an 8-1 lead. The Broncs were never closer than six for the rest of the set.
 
The second set was tight early, with the Broncs taking a 4-3 lead on a kill by Durham. After falling behind 9-6, the Broncs went on a 4-1 run, capped by a Watson kill, to tie the set at 10-10. The Broncs were within one at 14-13 after a Durham kill, but the Wolverines responded with a 7-0 run to put the set away.
 
The third set was also close early, as the set was tied at 7-7 on a Masaki kill. Fritzler responded with back-to-back kills, including four of the next six, as the Wolverines built a 12-8 lead. The Broncs climbed back to within 13-12 on a Watson kill, and 16-15 after a Nakisha Willden service error, but the Wolverines followed with a 6-1 run to put the set out of reach.
 
The Broncs complete this four-match road trip on Saturday at 9 p.m. when they visit Bakersfield.
