BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In a match featuring 11 lead changes and 21 ties, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the California State University, Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0 on Saturday at the Icardo Center.
The Roadrunners (13-9, 5-3 WAC) won the first set 25-20, the second set 25-19, and the third set 25-21.
Junior
Krysta Freitas led the Broncs (11-13, 1-7 WAC) with a match-high tying 13 kills and four aces. Senior
Nycole Masaki registered 29 assists. Junior
Shanice Faison had 18 digs. Freshman
Corynn Acuff came up with three blocks.
Debora Araujo led the Roadrunners with 13 kills while
Kelsee Sawyer had 12.
Fernanda Goncalves recorded 42 assists.
Mariah Alvidrez had 16 digs.
The Broncs jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first set on a Freitas ace and two errors by the Roadrunners.
Shayna Guitare and Araujo followed with back-to-back kills to give the Roadrunners the lead. The Broncs took the lead back when Freitas used two kills in the span of three serves to make it 12-10, but after a Bakersfield timeout, the Roadrunners scored four-straight and led the rest of the way en route to taking a 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners took a quick 5-0 lead in the second set, but the Broncs closed to within one on four occasions, at 12-11 on an Acuff kill, 13-12 on an error, 14-13 on a
Haley Durham kill, and 20-19 on the third of consecutive Freitas kills, but the Roadrunners scored the last five points of the set to go up 2-0.
Freshman
Alisha Watson opened the third set with back-to-back kills to put the Broncs on top. The set was tight throughout, featuring five lead changes and 13 ties. The Broncs trailed 10-8 when an attack error by Araujo gave Freitas the serve, and she responded with two aces and a kill, followed by an
Anjané Janda kill, to give the Broncs a 13-10 lead. The Broncs maintained a lead or tie until, up 19-18, a pair of Sawyer kills gave the Roadrunners the lead. The Broncs tied it at 20-20 on a Freitas kill, but the Roadrunners scored five of the final six points to win the match.
The Broncs return home to face Grand Canyon on Monday at 7 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse on Broncs Against Breast Cancer night, presented by Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is complimentary.
