LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the New Mexico State University Aggies 3-0 on Saturday at the Pan American Center.
The Aggies (13-10, 8-2 WAC) won each of the first two sets 25-13 and the final set 25-15.
Sophomore
Haley Durham led the Broncs (11-15, 1-9 WAC) with a match-high tying nine kills. Senior
Nycole Masaki recorded a match-high 22 assists. Junior
Shanice Faison posted a match-high nine digs.
Gwen Murphy led the Aggies with nine kills.
Taylor Livoti had a team-high 16 assists.
Stephanie Ziegler posted a team-high seven digs.
The Broncs jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set thanks in-part to kills by freshmen
Alisha Watson and
Anjané Janda. The Aggies scored the next four points to take the lead, but Durham responded with a kill to tie at 6-6. Three
Desiree Scott kills powered a 10-0 Aggies run, however, as they took a 1-0 lead.
The Broncs had an early lead in the second set as well, going up 2-1 on a
Krysta Freitas ace, 3-2 on a Ziegler attack error, 4-3 on a Durham kill and 5-4 on a Scott attack error. Down 8-5, Durham came up with a kill and Scott made an error to help the Broncs pull within one, but the Aggies went on a 12-1 run to pull away for a 2-0 lead.
The Aggies opened the third set on a 9-2 run, capped by a pair of
Jordan Reifsteck service aces, en route to completing the sweep.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 9 p.m. when they visit Seattle U.
