Volleyball Falls at Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Seattle University Redhawks 3-1 on Thursday at the Connolly Center.
 
The Redhawks (11-16, 8-4 WAC) won the first set 25-18. The Broncs (11-16, 1-10 WAC) bounced back to take the second set 25-23, but the Redhawks won the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-17.
 
Sophomore Haley Durham led the Broncs with a match-high tying 14 kills on .333 hitting with three blocks. Freshman Anjané Janda recorded 11 kills on .296 hitting. Senior Nycole Masaki recorded a match-high 41 assists. Junior Shanice Faison posted a match-high 14 digs.
 
Sarah Jaeckel led the Redhawks with 14 kills on .324 hitting while tying for the team-high with eight digs and three blocks. Iris Ivanis came up with 12 kills on .292 hitting with eight digs. Kerry Lane recorded 36 assists.
 
The first set was tight early, as it was tied at 2-2, and then the Broncs were within 6-5 after a Janda ace. The Redhawks bumped their lead out to five after a 6-2 run, and then maintained that lead before taking their largest lead at eight points on a Jaeckel service ace that made it 22-14.
 
The Broncs and Redhakws traded points over the first 16 serves of the second set, a time that included seven ties. With the Broncs down 8-6, Janda and Maria Kliefoth came up with kills to spark a 6-0 run to make it 12-8. The Redhawks came back to take a 16-14 by taking advantage of four errors, but a kill by sophomore San Benito alum Kasey Sanchez kicked off a 4-0 run to put the Broncs back on top. An Alec Goodrie kill tied the set at 18-18, but three Janda kills helped the Broncs to go up 23-20, building a lead that they held onto for the duration of the set.
 
The Broncs led early in the third set, going up 6-5 on a Janda kill, and 13-12 on an Angelica Vargas ace, but the Redhawks scored seven of the next nine points to go up 19-15, and the Broncs didn't get closer than three for the rest of the set.
 
Alisha Watson opened the fourth set with a kill, but four errors helped the Redhawks score the next five points. The Redhawks extended their lead to 7-2 on a Jaeckel kill. The Broncs got as close as 13-12 after a Janda kill, but the Redhawks went on a 7-1 run, capped by a pair of Stephanie Stoll kills, to put the match away.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 9 p.m. when they visit Idaho.
