EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team snapped an 11-set skid, but ultimately fell to the Seattle University Redhawks 3-1 on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 616.

The Redhawks (6-13, 3-1 WAC) won the first set 28-26 and the second set 25-21. The Broncs (10-10, 0-4 WAC) took the third set 25-18, but the Redhawks won the final set 25-21.

Junior Krysta Freitas led the Broncs with a double-double, coming up with 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore San Benito alum Kasey Sanchez tied her career-high with 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go with eight digs. Redshirt junior Maria Kliefoth finished with 10 kills and three blocks. Senior Nycole Masaki had 45 assists while junior Shanice Faison had 23 digs.

Iris Ivanis led the Redhawks with a double-double, recording a match-high 15 kills and 12 digs. Stephanie Stoll had 11 kills. Kerry Lane recorded 44 assists while Lani Beadle posted 22 digs.

The Broncs trailed 20-14 in the first set, but after a timeout, embarked on a 9-2 run on the power of three Sanchez kills to take a 23-22 lead. Back-to-back kills by Matea Mamic brought the Redhawks to set point, but sophomore Haley Durham followed up with two kills of her own to put the Broncs up 25-24. An Ivanis kill tied the set, but a bad set by Allison Farley again opened the door for the Broncs at 26-25. A Sanchez service error tied the set and then kills by Stoll and Ivanis put the Redhawks up 1-0.

The Redhawks jumped out to a 12-4 second set lead, and maintained that lead, going up 23-15. The Broncs scored the next five to pull within 23-20, but that's as close as they got.

The Broncs took the big early lead in the third set, going up 11-5 on a kill by Sanchez. The Redhawks got as close as two at 14-12 and 15-13 on kills by Martina Samadan, and then 16-14 on an Allison Farley kill, but the Broncs out scored the Redhawks 9-4 to pull away.

The Broncs had an early lead in the fourth set, going up 7-5 on an attack error by Lacy, but the Redhawks went on a 13-5 run to take an 18-12 lead. The Redhawks still led by six at 20-14, when the Broncs used kills by Kliefoth, freshman Alisha Watson and Sanchez to pull within 23-21, but after a Seattle U timeout, Stoll came up with a kill and Ivanis served up an ace to end the match.

The Broncs kick-off a four-match road trip on Thurs., Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Kansas City.
