Shaquille Boga drained a half court shot as time expired to send the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team to an 81-78 victory over the Tennessee Tech University Golden Eagles on Friday at the Holiday Inn Downtown Marina Islanders Basketball Tournament, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, at the American Bank Center.
After the Golden Eagles (1-2) tied the game for the first time since the first half on a
Josiah Moore layup with 48.1 seconds left, graduate student
Javorn Farrell missed a layup, but freshman
Alex Majewski came up with a steal with 4.5 seconds left on the clock. Farrell inbounded to Boga from the backcourt, and Boga went to his left. Just after crossing the half court line, Boga pushed a shot in the air and banked it in to end the game.
Boga finished with 17 points. Farrell led the Broncs (2-2) with a season-high 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting while going 8-for-10 from the foul line. Senior
Justin Leathers recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 12 rebounds (five offensive). Sophomore
Shaquille Hines tied his career-high with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with seven rebounds (four offensive).
Four Golden Eagles reached double-figures in scoring, led by
Landon Carter, who scored 17 points with a team-high five rebounds.
Ty Allen scored 16 points.
Jeremia Samarrippas finished with 13 points, seven assists and three steals.
Matt Marseille scored 11 points.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as nine in the opening five and a half minutes, going up 16-7 on a
Josiah Moore three-pointer. That when the Broncs offense came alive. Farrell converted a three-point play to kick-off a 21-7 run, capped by a
Josh Cleveland dunk with 8:18 remaining in the first half.
The Broncs led for the rest o the half, going up by as many as seven at 44-37 with 50 seconds left when redshirt freshman
Blake Provost sunk a pair of free throws.
The Broncs led by as many as 11, going up 59-48 on a free throw by Farrell with 15:40 left in the game.
The Broncs led 72-62 with 6:20 to go after a Boga three, and the Golden Eagles couldn't get closer than five until the final two minutes. An Allen jumper made it 76-73 with 1:54 left, and then a Samarrippas three brought the Golden Eagles within 78-76 with 57 seconds remaining.
The Broncs continue the tournament when they face IPFW on Saturday at 3 p.m.
