Volleyball Falls to Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 3-0 pm Friday at Antelope Gymnasium.
 
The Antelopes (9-17, 4-10 WAC) won the first set 25-23, the second set 25-21 and the third set 25-15.
 
Junior Krysta Freitas and Sophomore Haley Durham led the Broncs (13-19, 2-13 WAC) with 10 kills each. Senior Nycole Masaki recorded 26 assists and a team-high 11 digs. Shanice Faison added 10 digs while Alisha Watson recorded nine digs and five kills.
 
Shannon Dugan led Grand Canyon with 10 kills while adding seven digs. Mackenzie Phelps posted 15 digs and Jessica Posse led the Antelopes with 19 assists.
 
The Broncs held an 11-8 lead in the first set but Grand Canyon answered with five straight points to take the 13-11 lead. Later in the set, a kill by Kasey Sanchez tied it at 14. A kill by Freitas tied the set at 21 but the Antelopes went on to take the first set 25-23.
 
Grand Canyon jumped out to the early lead after a kill by Dugan made it 7-4 but the Broncs answered with a 7-4 run to tie the second set at 11 on a kill by Watson. The Antelopes then went on an 8-2 run grabbing the 19-13 lead before taking the set 25-21.
 
In the third set, the Antelopes jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Durham got the Broncs within four at 11-7 with a kill. The Antelopes added to their lead after a kill by Kristen Johannsen making it 15-8 before taking the final set 25-15.
 
The Broncs close out their season when they return home against CSU Bakersfield on November 20.
