EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team used an 18-0 run during the first half to pull away and beat the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs 80-37 on Tuesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs led 11-8 after seven minutes. Over the next seven minutes, the Broncs (2-1) scored 18-straight. It started when sophomores
KaeLynn Boyd and
Rickell Preston and junior
Brittany Bush combined for five free throws. After junior
Cherrell Price hit a jumper, Boyd nailed her second three of the game. Junior
Jasmine Thompson sunk back-to-back baskets and then Boyd ended the run the same way it started, with two free throws to make it 27-8 Broncs.
During the run, the Broncs were 5-for-11 from the field and 7-for-11 from the foul line. The Bulldogs (1-2) were 0-for-9 from the field and committed nine turnovers.
Boyd led the Broncs with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Thompson scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting with seven rebounds and two assists. Preston finished with six points, a career-high seven rebounds, a career-high two assists, and a career-high four steals.
Edinburg alum
Bianca Casas led the Bulldogs with nine points, two rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Kristen Lye posted a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Broncs led by as many as 43, going up 80-37 at the end of a 7-0 run after junior
Cha'zaye Wright hit a three-pointer and a jumper followed by a layup by freshman
Khiani Clark with 2:09 remaining.
Wright finished with seven points, a career-high eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Clark scored five points with five rebounds.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Virginia Commonwealth University for the first time in program history at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
