EDINBURG – In her final match as a member of the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team, senior
Nycole Masaki became the third student-athlete in program history to reach 2,000 career assists, but the Broncs fell to the Bakersfield Roadrunners 3-0 on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 698.
Masaki finishes her career with 2,028 assists, the third most in program history, after recording 29 to go with three aces and four digs. She finishes the season with 1,073 assists, tied for the fourth most in a single-season in program history.
The Roadrunners (20-11, 12-4 WAC) won all three sets 25-20.
Sophomore
Haley Durham led the Broncs (13-20, 2-14 WAC) with 10 kills on .381 hitting with three blocks. Freshman
Alisha Watson had a career-high five blocks while junior
Shanice Faison notched a team-best 16 digs.
Molly O'Hagan led the Roadrunners with 16 kills on .500 hitting.
Debora Araujo recorded a double-double with 14 kills on .520 hitting and 12 digs.
Fernanda Gonçalves posted a match-high 39 assists.
The Broncs jumped to an 8-1 lead in the first set thanks in-part to an ace by Masaki and kills by Watson and sophomore San Benito alum
Kasey Sanchez. The Roadrunners called timeout and then scored the next seven points to tie the set. The Roadrunners extended their lead to five for the first time at 16-11. A Durham kill, two errors and a Masaki ace helped the Broncs climb within 17-15, but that's as close as they got.
The Roadrunners opened the second set by scoring seven of the first eight points, prompting the Broncs to call a timeout. Two kills by Sanchez, one by junior
Krysta Freitas and one by Watson brought the Broncs within 7-5. The Broncs were within 10-7 after a block by Durham and Watson, and 12-9 after a kill by Durham, but the Roadrunners pulled away to go up 2-0.
The third set was tight most of the way. The Broncs led 3-1 out of the gate, but the Roadrunners came back to take the lead, going up 10-8 on an Araujo kill. The Broncs scored four of the next five points to tie it at 10 and then pull within 12-11 on a Watson kill, but the Broncs never led again.
