EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team erased a 16-point halftime deficit to take the lead, but ultimately fell to the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams 67-57 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs (2-2) led 21-20 eight and a half minutes into the game, but the Rams (3-1) scored 12-straight points over a six-minute span to take a 32-21 lead. Neither team shot well during the run, with the Broncs going 0-for-8 and the Rams going 2-for-9, but the Rams were 7-for-7 from the foul line while the Broncs didn't have an opportunity. It was all part of a 23-6 run over the final 11 minutes of the half that saw the Rams go up 43-27.

Junior Tonisha Walker opened the second half with a layup and then sophomore KaeLynn Boyd his back-to-back three-pointers. After a walker free throw, junior Cherrell Price, Boyd and junior Brianna Sifford all hit baskets to cap a 15-0 run that saw the Broncs pull within 43-42. Robyn Parks hit two free and a jumper to push the Rams' lead to five, but Walker and junior Brittany Bush hit back-to-back jumpers to set up a go-ahead layup by Sifford as the Broncs went up 48-47 with 10:10 left.

Parks hit a pair of free throws 47 seconds later, two of eight points she scored to power a 16-1 run over the next five minutes as the Rams again pulled away, this time for good.

Parks finished with a game-high 16 points and 15 rebounds. Three other Rams reached double-figures in scoring, including Jessica Pellechio, who had 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 from behind the arc, and Keira Robinson and Adaeze Alaeze, who scored 11 points each.

Boyd led the Broncs with a season-high 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Bush scored a career-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting with six rebounds, a career-high tying three blocks and one steal.

Both teams shot similar percentages, with the Rams at .344 and the Broncs at .323. The Rams, however, went 17-for-24 from the foul line while the Broncs were 7-for-12.

The Broncs are back in action on Friday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. when they face Norfolk State in the first game of the UTSA Classic at the start of a five-game road trip.
