BEAUMONT – Sophomore
Shaquille Hines scored a career-high 18 points with a career-high 11 rebounds for his first-career double-double to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs past the Lamar University Cardinals 66-61 on Wednesday at the Montagne Center.
Hines made a career-high eight field goals in 16 attempts while recording two assists, one block and two steals. Five of his rebounds were offensive. He was one of three Broncs (4-4) in double-figures, along with graduate student
Javorn Farrell, who scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting with six rebounds and one steal, and senior
Jamal Dantzler, who scored a season-high 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting with five rebounds, one block and a career-high two steals.
Amos Wilson led the Cardinals (1-6) with 15 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and one steal.
Marcus Owens also scored 15 points.
Nimrod Hilliard had 13 points, five rebounds, eight assists, one block and two steals.
Farrell scored seven of the Broncs' first 11 points, including a three-point play five minutes into the game that put the Broncs up 11-4. The Cardinals responded with a 9-2 run to tie the game on a pair of free throws by
Kelian Blanks two and a half minutes later. The Cardinals took their first lead at 18-17 on an Owens three with 9:58 remaining, but Hines hit a layup 19 seconds later to give the Broncs the lead back.
The Cardinals led by as many as seven after a Wilson layup made it 27-20 with 7:29 to go, but the Broncs went on a 14-3 run over the next 10 minutes to go up 34-30 on a Farrell layup.
An Owens three-pointer brought the Cardinals back within one, and then after a Hines jumper, Hilliard hit a jumper of his own, but that's as close as the Cardinals got as the Broncs led the rest of the way.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they visit Bradley.
