EDINBURG – After covering more than 15,000 miles while playing seven of their last eight matches on the road, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team kicked off a three-match home stand with a 3-1 victory over the Texas Southern University Tigers on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs (12-17) won the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-21. The Tigers (12-10) won the third set 25-22, but the Broncs came back to win the fourth set 25-18.

Sophomore Haley Durham led the Broncs with a career-high 16 kills on .444 hitting to go with a team-high four blocks. Freshman Alisha Watson finished with 13 kills on .310 hitting. Sophomore San Benito alum Kasey Sanchez recorded 10 kills on .364 hitting. Senior Nycole Masaki had a match-high 41 assists. Junior Shanice Faison posted a match-high 17 digs.

Kali Fluke led the Tigers with 13 kills. Jyra Churchill had a team-high 22 assists. Erin Spivey and Sarah Wooten recorded 11 digs each. Veronica Azubuike posted a match-high six blocks.

The first set was tight early, until Durham came up with back-to-back kills to give the Broncs a 15-11 advantage. The Broncs went up 20-13 on an ace by Masaki, and then won the set on a kill by Maria Kliefoth and an attack error by Robyn Shannon.

The Broncs jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set on a Macey Singleton ace. The Tigers climbed back to within 17-14 and 18-15, but the Broncs used a 6-2 run, capped by an Angelica Vargas ace, to get to set point before going up 2-0 in the match.

The third set was close throughout. The Broncs led 21-20 on a Durham kill, but kills by Fluke and Audriana Carson gave the Tigers the lead. A Watson kill brought the Broncs within 23-22, but a block by Azubuike and Carson, followed by a Mona Reed kill, gave the Tigers the set.

The Broncs took a 7-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Tigers scored four-straight to tie it up. The Broncs took advantage of three-straight errors to take the lead back, and they never relinquished it.
