EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with an 87-46 victory over the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 918.
 
Freshman Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (1-0) with 18 points while juniors Jasmine Thompson and Tonisha Walker scored 12 points each. In total, 13 of the 15 Broncs who played scored. Junior Brittany Bush led the Broncs with 11 rebounds (seven offensive) and three blocks. Junior T'Ondria Nolen had a game-high three steals.
 
The Broncs out-rebounded the Mountaineers (0-1) 61-35, including 33-16 on the offensive glass.
 
Lindsey Peterson led the Mountaineers with 11 points.
 
Goff scored 10 points on two three-pointers, a jumper and a pair of free throws to help the Broncs jump out to a 20-8 lead over the first 11:13.
 
The Mountaineers responded with a 10-1 run over the next 2:16, hitting all three of their shots and going 4-for-7 from the free throw line, their first attempts from the line after the Broncs had the first 11 attempts of the game, to pull within 21-18.
 
The Broncs called a timeout, and then Walker hit two threes and a jumper to propel the Broncs on a 29-5 run from the 6:06 mark o the first half to the 16:11 mark of the second half that gave the Broncs a 50-23 lead.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday at 4 p.m. when they visit Texas Tech in a game that will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest (FSSW). FSSW can be found in the Rio Grande Valley on Time Warner Cable channels 63, 304 (SD) and 1304 (HD), Dish Network channel 416 and DirecTV channel 676.
