DALLAS – Graduate student
Javorn Farrell tied a season-high with 23 points to lead all scorers as the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Southern Methodist University Mustangs 82-56 Wednesday night at the Curtis Culwell Center.
Farrell, who also grabbed nine rebounds, was one of two Broncs (4-9) to finish in double figures as
Shaquille Boga scored 12 points and dished out four assists. Freshman
Alex Majewski added eight points.
Markus Kennedy led the Mustangs (9-2) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Manuel added 14 points while Nic Moore chipped in 10 points with six assists.
Boga gave the Broncs an early 5-2 lead with a three-pointer at the 18:07 mark in the first half. The Mustangs answered with an 8-0 run to take the 10-5 lead. A three-pointer by Farrell gave the Broncs the 13-10 lead with 12:35 left in the first half but the Mustangs regained the lead with a three-pointer from Moore making it 16-13.
Later in the first half Farrell knocked down a jumper to make it 32-24 Mustangs. The Mustangs got their lead to 37-25 after a layup from Yanick Moreira but Boga cut it down to 40-34 with a jumper heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Broncs cut the Mustangs' lead to 43-38 after a pair of free throws from Farrell. Keith Frazier added to the SMU lead with a layup making it 57-43 as the Mustangs put the game out of reach taking the 82-56 victory.
The Broncs are back in action on December 29 when they host Duquesne University at the UTPA Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
