EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team tied for the best start in program history by improving to 6-4 with a 75-63 victory over the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

This is the fourth time the Broncs have had six wins through 10 games, having done so in 2007-08, 1995-96 and 1991-92. If the Broncs beat Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first game of the Wichita State Winter Classic, they will become the first Broncs women's basketball squad to start a season 7-4.

The Broncs made a season-high 11 three-pointers, the fourth-highest single-game total in program history, seven of which came from freshman Shawnte' Goff, which tied for the fourth-highest single-game total in program history, as part of her career-high and game-high 25 points. Junior Jasmine Thompson also set a new career-high in scoring, with 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting plus 7-of-8 from the line to go with five rebounds and a career-high tying three steals.

The first eight of the Broncs' three-pointers came on 11 attempts in a 9:21 span in the middle of the first half. The Broncs were down 9-3 when Tonisha Walker hit the first three with 15:28 remaining. Goff then hit three in a row, but while she was hitting hers, Laila Suleiman hit four in four attempts and Malaika Green added one as the Mavericks pushed their lead out to 13 at 28-15 with 10:16 left.

Sophomore Alexandria Hill and Goff responded with three-pointers to spark a 14-2 run, during which time Thompson and junior Cha'zaye Wright also knocked down long range shots to bring the Broncs within 30-29.

That's as close as the Broncs got until a Goff three tied the game at 41-41 with 16:39 to go in the second half. The Broncs took their first lead three minutes later on a pair of Cherrell Price free throws, and they never trailed again.

Suleiman led the Mavericks (0-10) with 17 points. Tahlia Pope scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Green scored 10 points.
