WICHITA, Kan. – Junior
Brittany Bush posted her fourth double-double of the season, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks 73-61 on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena in the opening game of the Wichita State Winter Classic.
Bush led the Broncs (6-5) with a career-high 18 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive) with two steals and one block while going 8-for-14 from the field. Junior
Jasmine Thompson scored 11 points. Junior
Cherrell Price scored a career-high 10 points.
Ericka House led the Mavericks (6-5) with 21 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Madi Robson scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting with four rebounds and six assists.
Taijhe Kelly scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting with 11 rebounds (five offensive) and four blocks.
The Broncs led 5-3 in the opening minutes on a jumper by Bush and a three-pointer by Thompson, but the Mavericks responded with a 21-7 run over the next nine minutes, bookended by baskets by House, to go up 26-12.
The Broncs scored the next six points, five of which came on a three-pointer and a jumper by Price, to pull within 26-18.
The Broncs got as close as 37-32 with 15:50 remaining after a three-pointer and a free throw by Thompson.
The Broncs are back in action on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they face host Wichita State.
