Women's Basketball Rallies Past Houston Baptist

Box Score

HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team rallied back from a 25-point deficit to beat the Houston Baptist University Huskies 76-74 on Tuesday at Sharp Gym.

At 5-2, the Broncs are now off to their best start since 2003-04, when they were also 5-2.

The Huskies (3-4) led 16-15 after seven minutes, and then went on a tear, using a 24-0 run over the next nine minutes to go up 40-15.

Tonisha Walker broke the run with a layup, but Anna Strickland responded with a layup of her own to make it 42-17. That's when the Broncs made their move, scoring the next eight points while outscoring the Huskies 52-27 over the next 20 minutes to tie the game at 69-69 on a pair of Jasmine Thompson free throws with 3:43 remaining.

Tayler Jefferson responded with a three and the Huskies led 74-70 with 1:32 left, but a Brittany Bush layup with 1:09 to go, a pair of Walker free throws with 35 seconds remaining, and a Thompson jumper with seven seconds left gave the Broncs their first lead since it was 2-0, which was enough to win.

A season-high five Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, led by Bush who scored 16 points with 11 rebounds (five offensive), two blocks and two steals for her second-straight double-double. Thompson scored a season-high 15 points with five rebounds and a career-high tying three steals. Shawnte' Goff also scored 15 points, doing so with four assists. KaeLynn Boyd scored 12 points with three rebounds and four assists. Walker finished with 11 points.

Erin McGarrachan led three Huskies in double-figures scoring with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Shanice Steenholdt also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Rachel Arthur scored 15 points.

The Broncs are back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
