CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 68-54 on Sunday at American Bank Center.
Juniors
Jasmine Thompson and
Tonisha Walker led the Broncs (5-3) with 10 points each. Thompson hit a career-high three three-pointers while adding five rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals.
Three Islanders (5-3) reached double-figures in scoring, led by
Jasmine Shaw, who scored 17 points with six rebounds and six assists.
Brandi Huff scored 12 points with five rebounds.
Brittany Mbamalu scored 10 points.
The Islanders scored the first seven points of the game thanks in-part to a layup and a three-pointer by Mbamalu. The Broncs responded by scoring 10 of the next 15 points to pull within 12-10 on a pair of Walker free throws with 17:03 remaining.
The Broncs took their first lead midway through the half when
KaeLynn Boyd made a layup to put the Broncs up 19-18. The Broncs and Islanders traded baskets for most of the rest of the half, with the Broncs leading 34-31 at the break.
Walker hit a three-pointer early in the second half as the Broncs took their largest lead at 37-31, but the Islanders responded with a 20-4 run, capped by a Shaw three-pointer midway through the second, to pull away for the win.
The Broncs visit TCU on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 4 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on Fox Sports Southwest.
