Islanders Take Game One of Doubleheader

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team got shutout on three hits in a 6-0 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Chapman Field.
 
Islanders (1-1) starter Trevor Foss (1-0) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out 15 while allowing three hits and one walk.
 
All three hits were singles coming from the No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters, Jacob Huckabay, Riley Goulding and Shane Klemcke.
 
The Islanders jumped on Broncs (1-1) starter Dusten Knight (0-1) early, as with runners on the corners and no one out in the first, Cody Stephens stole second, and on the wild throw from Huckabay, Jordan Lee scored. Jonathan Gonzales followed with an RBI-ground out to make it 2-0.
 
With two outs in the third, Brad Porras singled, stole second, and scored on an Eric Weiss single to make it 3-0.
 
The Islanders put runners at second and third with one out in the fifth. Gonzlaes scored on a wild pitch that also moved Porras to third. One out later, Dominic Lopez hit an RBI-single to make it 5-0.
 
That was it against Knight, who struck out three while allowing nine hits and two walks in five innings.
 
The Islanders added an unearned run in the seventh against Bryan Maxwell, who allowed two hits and one walk while striking out one in three innings of relief.
 
The Broncs and Islanders continue this four-game series with game two of the doubleheader in approximately 30 minutes.
