EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team held the Houston Baptist University Huskies without a field goal over the final seven minutes, but the Huskies went 13-for-14 from the foul line to beat the Broncs 53-48 on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in front of a season-high crowd of 2,101.
Rob Lewis made a layup with 7:05 remaining to give the Huskies (10-14, 2-3 GWC) a 40-38 lead with 7:05 remaining. A pair of
Jesus Delgado free throws tied the game 19 seconds later. The Huskies only attempted three more field goals and the Broncs (13-14, 3-3 Great West Conference) went 4-for-10, but while the Huskies went 13-for-14 from the line, the Broncs went 3-for-4.
Delgado led the Broncs with 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 1-of-1 from behind the arc plus 7-for-8 from the line.
Three Huskies reached double-figures in scoring, led by
Rob Lewis and
Anthony Hill who scored 12 points each.
Art Bernardi scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Bernardi went 7-for-8 from the foul line while Lewis went 6-for-8 as the Huskies went 20-for-26 (.769). The Broncs were 11-for-14 (.786) from the line.
It was a close game throughout, as the Broncs never led by more than two and the Huskies never led by more than six. There were nine lead changes and 10 ties.
The Broncs are back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they visit UT Arlington.
