NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – Broncs starter
Sam Street pitched a complete game six-hitter to lead the University of Texas-Pan American baseball team past the Northwestern State University Demons 4-1 on Friday at Brown-Stroud Field.
Street (2-0) allowed just an unearned run on five singles, a double and two walks while striking out five. He did a good job of keeping the ball down, inducing 14 groundouts compared to just six fly outs from the 33 batters he faced.
The Broncs (2-3) got on the board in the third. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Alex Howe laced a triple to right-center field, scoring
Riley Goulding and
Shane Klemcke to make it 2-0.
That was it against Demons (3-2) starter
Joe Parrack (0-1) who allowed four hits in four innings, but he threw a lot of pitches while walking two and striking out seven.
Steven Spann took over in the fifth and immediately plunked Klemcke.
Derek Hagy reached on a fielder's choice and Klemcke made it to second on an error by Spann. Both runners advanced on another error by Spann, and then a sacrifice fly by Goulding scored Klemcke to make it 3-0.
The Demons scratched across an unearned run in the seventh against Street. After a
Will Watson single,
Nick Purdy reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a throwing error. A wild pitch got Purdy to third and then
Matt Baca hit an RBI-double to make it 3-1.
The Broncs got that run back in the ninth when Goulding singled with two outs and Howe doubled him home.
Howe finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a stolen base while Goulding went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Broncs and Demons continue this three-game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
