NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the Northwestern State University Demons 6-4 on Saturday at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Broncs (2-4) came up with a pair of runs against Demons (4-2) starter
Robert Baker in the third.
Shane Klemcke and
Derek Hagy led of with singles.
Riley Goulding followed with an infield single that should have loaded the bases, but an error allowed everyone to take an extra base, making it 1-0.
Alex Howe hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Hagy and make it 2-0.
The Demons got those runs right back in the bottom of the inning against Broncs starter
Dusten Knight. With one on and two outs,
Nick Purdy lifted a fly ball to left field that Hagy dropped, extending the inning.
Will Watson walked to load the bases, and then
Edwin Gomez hit a two-run single to tie the game.
The Demons came through with two outs again in the fourth, as
Toby Cornejo reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on a single by
Garrett Kilgore to make it 3-2.
The Demons went to
Zach Krebs out of the bullpen to start the sixth, but after hitting
Will Klausing with a pitch, consecutive wild pitches moved Klausing to third, from where he scored on a
Jacob Huckabay single to tie the game and knock out Krebs.
Ashton Sivigliano (1-0) came in and immediately threw a wild pitch, allowing Huckabay to move to second. After a
Chris Torres walk, Klemcke put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position and Hagy hit a sacrifice fly to give the Broncs a 4-3 lead.
Sivigliano then settled down to pitch two hitless innings of relief.
The Demons took the lead in the bottom of the seventh against La Joya High School alum
Guadalupe Barrera (0-1) who hit Watson with a pitch to leadoff the inning. Purdy tried to sacrifice him into scoring position, but a wild throw by catcher
Chris Torres allowed Watson to score and Purdy to reach third base, from where he scored on a
Matt Baca sacrifice fly to make it 5-4 Demons.
Purdy hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to score Corenjo and give the Demons an insurance run.
Cameron Brewer pitched two scoreless innings for his first save.
Hagy led the Broncs offensively by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Huckabay went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Two Demons had multi-hit days, as Kilgore went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Gomez went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases.
The Broncs and Demons complete this three-game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
