HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team and Houston Baptist University Huskies both went on prolonged significant runs, taking up most of the second half, but the Broncs came out with a 67-59 victory on Saturday at Sharp Gym.
The Broncs (10-15, 3-4 Great West Conference) had a 33-29 lead when
Franchesca Simon hit two free throws with 1:35 left in the first half to complete the scoring before the teams returned to the locker room. The Broncs scored the first 11 points of the second half, spanning six and a half minutes, and then, after a
Monay Neal free throw, the following eight points to complete the 21-1 run on a three-pointer by Harlingen South alum
Bianca Torre that made it 54-30 with 11:39 remaining.
During the run, the Broncs went 8-for-15 from the field while holding the Huskies (5-21, 0-5 GWC) 0-for-14.
Tayler Jefferson nailed a three-pointer at the 10:48 mark as the Huskies responded by hitting nine of their next 12 shots to power a 20-2 run and pull within 56-50 on an
Erin McGarrachan layup with four minutes to go. During the run, the Broncs went 1-for-4 from the field.
Jasmine Thompson snapped the run with a free throw at the 3:49 mark, and then
KaeLynn Boyd hit a long two on the Broncs' next possession to make it 59-50.
Boyd led the Broncs with 15 points.
Johnondra Patterson finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Torre scored 10 points with five assists, four steals and three rebounds.
Joyea Marshall scored nine points with 11 rebounds while
Cassandra Moody scored nine points with six rebounds and two blocks.
Shanice Steenholdt led the Huskies with 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Jefferson finished with 15 points, three assists and two steals.
The Broncs are back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they host New Orleans at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. Doors open at 6:00.
