EDINBURG – Three Broncs reached double-figures, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 71-62 on Wednesday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Cassandra Moody led the Broncs (8-14) with 14 points and six rebounds.
KaeLynn Boyd scored 10 points with five assists and three steals.
Rickell Preston scored a career-high 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting with two rebounds and two steals.
Amber Williams led the Roadrunners (9-15) with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, with three steals.
Janae Coffee narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and nine rebounds.
It was a tight game throughout, with the Broncs taking their largest lead at 40-35 with 13:35 remaining on a
Jasmine Gordon three-point play.
The Broncs led 46-43 after a pair of
Joyea Marshall free throws with 11:12 remaining, but Williams hit a three-pointer and a layup to put the Roadrunners ahead. A Gordon layup tied the game, and then after a
Batabe Zempare layup, Preston hit a jumper to tie the game at 50-50.
Williams hit a three-pointer with 8:18 left to spark an 11-2 run spanning two and a half minutes that saw the Roadrunners go ahead 61-52. The Broncs got as close as five twice in the final minutes, with the last time coming after Boyd hit a jumper with 2:23 remaining that made it 65-60, but the Roadrunners scored the next six points to put the game away.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when they visit Chicago State.
