OREM, Utah – Two Broncs reached double-figures in scoring as the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 66-49 on Saturday at the UCCU Center.
Jesus Delgado led the Broncs (12-13, 3-2 Great West Conference) with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting.
Justin Leathers scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
Four Wolverines (11-13, 2-3 GWC) reached double-figures, led by
Ben Aird, who scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting with 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Jason Johnson also scored 15 points, doing so on 5-of-8 shooting, with five assists.
Holton Hunsaker scored 12 points with four assists while
Nick Thompson added a double-double with 11 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, with 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Leathers hit a jumper and Delgado nailed a three as the Broncs jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Johnson hit two free throws and Aird connected on a pair of layups to go ahead 6-5, but a
Lauri Toivonen jumper made it 7-6 Broncs with 15:20 remaining in the first half.
Johnson responded with a three-pointer and then Thompson scored seven-straight points as the Wolverines went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good at 16-7.
The Broncs were within 20-12 at the 6:22 mark, but a
Zach Jones jumper 29 seconds later sparked a 9-0 run that made it 29-19.
The Broncs got back within eight at 35-27 on a
Brandon Provost layup that punctuated a 10-4 run by the Broncs to start the second half, but after the two teams traded baskets,
Antoine Hosley hit a pair of free throws, Aird knocked down a layup and Johnson made a three to push the Wolverines' lead to 44-29 and back into double-digits for the rest of the game.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when they host future WAC opponent CSU Bakersfield at the UTPA Fieldhouse during the second annual Battle of the Deans.
