CHICAGO, Illinois – Harlingen-native
Bianca Torre broke her fifth program career record, field goals attempted, while leading the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team past the Chicago State University Cougars 71-40 on Saturday at Jones Convocation Center.
Torre scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-10 from behind the arc, with four assists. The six three-pointers ties Torre's career-high.
Torre has now attempted 1,198 field goals in her career, passing
Cheveron Terry (1,192, 1997-01) for most in program history. Torre also holds the program career records in points, assists, steals and free throws made. She ranks in the top five of six other categories as well, including second in three-pointers made (226), three-pointers attempted (645) and free throw percentage (.784), third in field goals made (441) and free throws attempted (347) and fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.350).
Torre was one of three Broncs (9-14, 2-3 Great West Conference) in double-figures scoring, along with
Cassandra Moody, who scored 13 points with eight rebounds.
KaeLynn Boyd, who scored 12 points with seven assists and a career-high tying four steals.
Joyea Marshall led the Broncs in rebounding with 15, one shy of her career-high, while dishing out a career-high six assists.
With the game tied at 4-4, Boyd hit a three-pointer to spark the Broncs onto a 14-0 run.
Jasmine Sanders ended the run with free throws six and a half minutes later, but the Broncs held the Cougars (4-20, 2-2 GWC) 0-11 from the field until the eight minute mark, when
Jackie Jones hit a runner in the lane to make it 18-8. Torre responded with a three-pointer to start a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to make it 33-8.
The Broncs held the Cougars to 2-of-20 (.100) shooting over the first 17 minutes of the game, including 0-of-5 from behind the arc. The Broncs, on the other hand, were 11-for-25 (.440) from the field and 5-for-9 (.556) from behind the arc while outrebounding the Cougars 22-to-11, including 8-to-4 on the offensive glass.
Up 36-16 at halftime, the Broncs kept up the pressure on both sides of the court by opening the second half on a 10-2 run and never looking back.
The Broncs finished the game at 26-for-54 (.481) from the field, including a season-best 12-for-22 (.545) from behind the arc.
The Broncs held the Cougars 15-for-56 (.268) from the field, including 2-for-9 (.222) from behind the arc.
The Broncs out rebounded the Cougars 42-to-26.
Paris Williams led the Cougars with 11 points.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Utah Valley University at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive free popcorn. It's the first game of a single-admission double-header, as the men's basketball team faces Houston Baptist at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
