EDINBURG –
Jacob Huckabay delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to lift the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team past the Lamar Cardinals 5-4 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Cardinals (16-3) took the early lead as Seth Dornak hit a solo home run off of Broncs starter
Sam Street (3-1). Later in the inning, Lamar added two more runs after a fielding error kept the inning alive that made it 3-0.
The Broncs (4-9) got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by
Riley Goulding that allowed
Alberto Morales to score and that cut the lead to 3-1.
Morales got the Broncs within one run after an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning that allowed Pharr-native
Bryan Ramirez to score from first making it 3-2 Cardinals.
UTPA grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out two-run single by Ramirez that drove in
Andy Fortuna and
Alex Howe making it 4-3 Broncs.
Aaron Olivas tied the game at four on an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the eighth that allowed Jude Vidrine to score from third.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the eighth,
Aaron Moore led off the inning with an infield single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter
Shane Ammon. With two outs, Huckabay lined a double to left-center that allowed Moore to score from second giving the Broncs the 5-4 lead.
Aaron Moore then came on in the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning for his second save of the season giving the Broncs the 5-4 victory.
Street picked up his third win of the season after pitching eight innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits and striking out six.
The Broncs and Cardinals play game two of their three-game series Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Dylan Badura (1-2) is scheduled to face Collin Chapman (3-0) with the first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
