EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored 11 runs over the first three innings en route to a 13-2 victory over the Jackson State University Tigers on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The game ended after six and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Broncs (9-12) loaded the bases against
Chris Wingard (1-3) with one out in the first.
Alex Howe followed with a two-run single and
Chris Torres hit an RBI-single. One out later,
Riley Goulding launched his first-career home run into the leftfield bullpen to make it 6-0.
Leading off for the second inning in a row,
Derek Hagy drew a four-pitch walk to start the second. After a
Jacob Huckabay single, PSJA High School alum
Bryan Ramirez hit a grounder to the right side with the runners in motion. Tigers (15-14) second baseman
Stephen Curtis had to range far to his left to get the ball and throw out Ramirez, but while that was happening, Hagy took an aggressive turn towards the plate, and first baseman
Ethan Bright's throw home was not in time.
Will Klausing followed with an RBI-single to knock out Wingard and make it 8-0.
Torres led off the third with an infield-single and
Alberto Morales doubled. One out later,
Shane Klemcke hit a sacrifice fly, and then after Hagy walked, Huckabay hit a two-run double to make it 11-0.
That was more than enough for Broncs starter
Dusten Knight (1-2), who notched a season-high eight strikeouts while pitching his first complete game of the season, scattering four hits and two walks in a season-high seven innings.
The Broncs hit the road for six games on Tuesday with the first of two at TCU at 6:00 p.m.
