Women's Basketball Clinches Spot in Great West Conference Tournament Semifinals with Win Over Chicago State

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team clinched the No. 3 seed in the Great West Conference Tournament with a 71-61 victory over the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
The Broncs (12-15, 4-4 GWC) advance directly to the semifinals, where they will face second-seeded NJIT on Friday at 12:00 p.m. at Jones Convocation Center on the campus of Chicago State.
 
Cassandra Moody led the Broncs with a career-high tying 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Harlingen South High School alum Bianca Torre scored 18 points while hitting five three-pointers. KaeLynn Boyd scored 13 points while hitting all three of her three-point attempts to go with five assists and three steals. Joyea Marshall scored eight points with 11 rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Jasmine Gordon scored eight points with five rebounds.
 
Tierra Williams led the Cougars (4-25, 2-6 GWC) with 26 points while going 8-for-9 from behind the arc. Jackie Jones scored 16 points with five assists. Paris Williams scored 10 points with 11 rebounds for the double-double.
 
The game was tight early, with the Cougars taking a 20-18 lead on a Jones jumper with 8:53 remaining in the first half. The Broncs, however, used two three-pointers by Torre and one by Boyd to power a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 31-20 lead.
 
The Broncs led by nine early in the second half, but a Paris Williams layup at the 13:43 mark sparked an 11-4 run over the next 3:40 as the Cougars pulled within 48-46. The Broncs responded with a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes to pull away.
