AUSTIN – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball pitching staff issued 12 walks, five of which scored, in a 6-1 loss to the University of Texas Longhorns on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Broncs (16-16) started off the game with a great defensive play, as
Shane Klemcke made a diving stop of a
Ben Johnson hot shot in the hole on the left side and threw a one-hopper to first that
Alberto Morales went into a split to corral while keeping his foot on the bag for the out.
The next batter was
Weston Hall, who drew a seven-pitch walk from
Matt Daniels (0-3). One out later,
Mark Payton hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0. The Longhorns (20-15) went on to load the bases, but Daniels got
Jacob Felts to fly out to end the threat.
That was the first of three times that the Longhorns stranded the bases loaded. In total, they stranded 15 base runners.
With two outs in the third,
Colby McCasland walked
Collin Shaw, allowed a single to Felts and then walked
Ty Marlow.
Brooks Marlow followed with an RBI-walk.
Kyle Tokunaga came in and issued an RBI-walk to Johnson, and then balked to allow another run to score to make it 4-0.
With one out in the fourth,
CJ Hinojosa drew a seven-pitch walk to knock out Tokunaga.
Bryan Maxwell came in and, after getting a strikeout, allowed back-to-back hits to Felts and Marlow to make it 5-0.
Longhorns starter
Josh Urban (1-0) was cruising along through four, allowing just one hit. In the fifth, however,
Dillon Engelhart led off with a double, and one out later,
Chris Torres picked up his second hit, an RBI-double to make it 5-1. One out after that, Klemcke singled to knock out Urban, but
Travis Duke came in and pitched two and one-third innings of scoreless baseball to build the bridge to
Cory Knebel, who pitched two scoreless innings to end it.
The Broncs are back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. when they open a four-game Great West Conference series at Houston Baptist.
