Late Rally Falls Short for Baseball at TCU

FORT WORTH – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team rallied for four runs in the eighth, but it wasn't enough in a 9-5 loss to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs on Tuesday at Lupton Field.
 
Down 1-0, the Broncs (9-13) got on the board in the fourth. Jacob Huckabay led off the inning with a triple and PSJA High School alum Bryan Ramirez hit an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1.
 
That was it against Horned Frogs (12-16) starter Trey Teakell (1-0), who pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three.
 
The Horned Frogs scored eight runs over the next three innings to take a 9-1 lead.
 
In the eighth, however, the Horned Frogs dipped into their bullpen and the Broncs bats came alive. With Tejay Antoine on the mound, Riley Goulding singled. One out later, Derek Hagy singled, Shane Ammon hit a pinch-hit RBI-single, Ramirez hit an RBI-single and Dillon Englehart hit a pinch-hit RBI-single. Travis Evans came on in relief and Alex Howe hit a sacrifice fly to cap the inning at 9-5.
 
Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Goulding went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Kyle Tokunaga made his first-career start for the Broncs, allowing just a first inning run on a Derek Odell RBI-single in two and two-thirds innings of work.
 
Dylan Badura (2-5) took over with runners at second and third and two outs in the third and got Odell to pop out to end the threat.
 
The Horned Frogs loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Badura struck out Cody Jones, but Boomer White hit a bases clearing double to make it 4-1.
 
Odell came through again for the Horned Frogs in the fifth, singling with one out and scoring on a Jerrick Suiter sacrifice fly two batters later to make it 5-1.
 
In the sixth, Odell hit a sacrifice fly to cap a four-run inning with the score 9-1.
 
Odell finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Three other Horned Frogs also had multi-hit games. White went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, Kyle Bacak went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Kevin Cron went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
The Broncs look for a series split with the Horned Frogs on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
