HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team beat the Houston Baptist University Huskies 4-3 in game two to complete the doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Husky Field.
The game was tied at 3-3 going into the eighth, when
Dillon Englehart led off with a single against
Josh Martinez (1-1). After a sacrifice bunt and a foul out,
Shane Klemcke singled to left field.
Jordan McCoy uncorked a strong throw from left field, but Englehart slid around the tag attempt of catcher
Jordan Hebert to score and give the Broncs (18-17, 9-2 Great West Conference) a 4-3 lead.
Preston Budzsizewski pitched a scoreless eighth to set-up
Aaron Moore, who picked up his third save with a scoreless ninth.
The Broncs got on the board against Huskies (17-18-1, 6-5 GWC) starter
Brandon Hammerly right away.
Shane Ammon was hit by the first pitch of the game and
Riley Goulding laid down a sacrifice bunt on the second pitch.
Jacob Huckabay hit an RBI-single on the fourth pitch to make it 1-0.
The Broncs made it 2-0 on just three pitches in the third.
Andy Fortuna led off with a bunt-single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ammon and scored on an RBI-single by Goulding.
After a two-out fourth inning RBI-single by
Curtis Jones cut the Broncs' lead in half, the Broncs loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Martinez came in out of the bullpen, and got an infield pop-up, but with two outs, Klemcke drew a five-pitch walk to force-in a run and make it 3-1.
The Huskies rallied in the seventh, putting the tying runs in scoring position with one out to knock out
Dylan Badura.
Matthew Harrell (1-1) came in and allowed an RBI-double to
Josh Foust and an RBI-groundout to Hebert to tie the game.
Badura struck out three and walked one in six and one-third innings. Four of the five hits he allowed were singles.
The Broncs and Huskies complete this four-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
