EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team not only picked up their first-ever win over the defending Great West Conference champion Utah Valley University Wolverines, but became the first team to ever mercy rule them, winning 13-0 in a game stopped after six and a half innings on Thursday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (25-27, 15-9 GWC) had previously been 0-12 against the Wolverines (23-26, 14-7 GWC).
The win snapped the Broncs' six-game losing streak and kept them within two games of first place Northern Colorado (17-7 GWC), which beat NYIT 8-3.
Sam Street (9-3) pitched his seventh complete game and third shutout for the Broncs, striking out nine while allowing just two hits. Street retired the first 11 and final eight batters he faced.
The Broncs batted around to put five unearned runs on the board in the first inning against
Devin Nelson (4-5), thanks in-part to RBI-singles by
Riley Goulding and
Shane Klemcke as well as a sacrifice fly by
Chris Torres.
That's where the score stayed until the sixth, when the first four batters reached without hitting the ball out of the infield, and then the fifth batter,
Alberto Morales, hit the ball out of the park for his GWC-leading seventh home run of the season and first-career grand slam. The Broncs immediately loaded the bases again, and after
Derek Hagy was plunked to force-in a run,
Shane Ammon and PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez hit infield-RBI singles to cap the eight-run inning.
The Broncs and Wolverines continue this four-game series with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is slated for the full nine. Gates open at 2 p.m.
