EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with a 6-5 victory over the Utah Valley University Wolverines and clinch the No. 2 seed in the Great West Conference Tournament in game two of a doubleheader on Friday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Broncs (27-27, 17-9 GWC) become the first team to ever win a GWC series against the Wolverines (23-28, 14-9 GWC) after taking the first three games.
Aaron Moore paced the Broncs by going a career-best 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored. He was involved in all of the Broncs' runs.
With the Broncs trailing 5-4 in the ninth,
Alberto Morales led off with a double and Moore drew a four-pitch walk to knock out
Ryan Evans (2-2).
Riley Goulding came up next against
Brian Whatcott and showed bunt on the first pitch, which was a ball. On the next pitch, with the corner infielders charging, Goulding pulled his bunt back and slapped a game-tying single down the right field line. Whatcott intentionally walked
Shane Klemcke to load the bases, and the Wolverines went to five infielders, leaving outfielders only in show left and right field.
Derek Hagy came up and hit a fly ball deep enough to right field to drop in for the game winning hit.
That made a winner of
Preston Budziszewski (2-3), who pitched two and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out three.
Moore drove in the Broncs' first two runs with two out singles in the first and third innings. The first one put the Broncs up 1-0 and the second one gave the Broncs a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, with the Broncs down 4-2, Moore led off with his first-career triple, and out later, scored on an RBI-single by Klemcke to make it a one-run game.
In the seventh, with the Broncs down 5-3, Moore drew a one-out walk and later scored on a single by Hagy to again make it a one-run game.
The Wolverines scratched across their first run against
Dylan Badura in the second.
Mark Krueger led off with a triple. Badura responded by striking out the next two batters, but with a 1-2 count on
Stone Ramsey, Badura threw a wild pitch to score the run.
In the fourth,
Greyson Bodgen and
Kai Hatch led off with singles. Krueger hit an RBI-double and
Riley White and
Spencer Gothberg followed with RBI-singles to make it 4-1 Wolverines.
In the seventh,
Willie Pratt drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a throwing error and scored on an RBI-single by Bogden to make it 5-3 Wolverines.
The Broncs and Wolverines complete the regular season on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Broncs will honor the entire senior class in a special ceremony before the game. Gates open at 11 a.m.
