NEWARK, New Jersey – The second-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team fell to the third-seeded Houston Baptist University Huskies 3-1 on Wednesday during the second round of the Great West Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Broncs face eighth-seeded Chicago State, which knocked out fourth-seeded Utah Valley 3-2, in an elimination game on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
The Broncs (28-29) got their lone run against
Tyler Hoelscher (8-5) in the fifth.
Shane Klemcke tripled off the right field wall and
Derek Hagy hit an RBI-single on the next pitch to make it 2-1.
Hoelscher pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits while striking out four.
The Huskies (32-24-1) scratched out a run against
Dusten Knight (5-4) right away.
Luke Clements led off the game with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI-single by
Jordan McCoy.
That was it until the fifth, when, with two outs, Clements homered off the right field foul pole, his sixth of the season, to make it 2-0.
Bradley Brown added a run for the Huskies in the sixth with his first home run of the year to make it 3-1.
That was it against Knight, who struck out eight in nine innings of work. It was his fourth complete game of the season.
