NEWARK, New Jersey – The eighth-seeded Chicago State University Cougars eliminated the second-seeded University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team 4-1 on Thursday at the Great West Conference Tournament at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Cougars (10-44) starter
James Tucker (3-6) was dominant from the outset, allowing just one hit to the Broncs (28-30) over the first eight innings, a single by
Shane Klemcke with one out in the seventh.
In the ninth, however,
Alberto Morales and
Aaron Moore led off with singles and Klemcke drew a four-pitch walk to knock out Tucker.
Jerry Silva came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to
Derek Hagy, and then
Dillon Engelhart came up with a pinch-hit single to re-load the bases, but
Chris Torres lined out to right field and
Will Klausing flied out to center field to end it, giving Silva his first save.
The Cougars took the lead against
Dylan Badura (3-7) in the third. With one out,
Joehl Calixto singled and
Eric O'Brien reached on an error. After a sacrifice bunt,
Mattingly Romanin hit a two-run single to make it 2-0.
The Cougars put runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth, and after a double-steal scored a run, Romanin hit an RBI-single to knock out Badura with the score 4-0.
