GRAND FORKS, North Dakota –
Riley Goulding had hits in both games to extend his hitting streak to 17, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by the University of North Dakota, dropping game one 8-7 and game two 6-5, on Friday at Kraft Memorial Field.
Goulding went a combined 2-for-6 with a walk, a double and two runs scored and is now 22-for-54 (.407) during the streak.
Both teams piled up hits during the two games, as the Broncs (23-21, 13-4 Great West Conference) went 23-for-67 (.343) and UND (15-17-1, 6-8 GWC) went 25-for-74 (.338).
The Broncs were led by
Shane Ammon, who went 4-for-7 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, and
Shane Klemcke, who went 5-for-9 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
Derek Hagy and
Will Klausing had three hits each.
The Broncs had a 3-1 lead in the first game after three innings on a Klemcke RBI-single in the second and a two-run single by
Alex Howe in the third.
In the fourth, UND put runners at second and third with nobody out.
Sam Street (8-2) responded by striking out
Jeff Campbell and getting
Patrick Vandoorne to ground back to the mound. Street got to 2-2 on
Matt Wherli, who proceeded to hit a two-run single through the left side. After a bunt-single,
Jacob Threlkeld hit an RBI-single to make it 4-2.
UND got another two-out run in the sixth on three consecutive singles, the last of which, by
Kris Kwak, drove in a run to make it 5-2.
Ammon hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to get the Broncs a run back, but Vandoorne hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning to get the run back.
The Broncs pushed across another run in the eighth, but UND responded with two in the bottom of the inning.
The Broncs tried to come back in the ninth, as Goulding drew a leadoff walk and Ammon followed with a double. Howe hit a sacrifice fly and
Alberto Morales hit an RBI-single to make it a one-run game with the tying run on base, but
Patrick Riewer struck out
Dillon Engelhart and got Klemcke to groundout to pick up his second save.
That made a winner of
Andrew Thome (4-5), who allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three in seven innings.
In game two, UND jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Broncs tied it up in the second. UND took the lead back in the fourth, and held it for another inning. In the sixth, however, the Broncs got three-straight singles from Klausing, Klemcke and
Chris Torres to start the inning, the last of which scored a run to tie the game. After a sacrifice bunt by PSJA alum
Bryan Ramirez, Hagy laid down a suicide squeeze to give the Broncs a 3-2 lead.
The Broncs added a run in the seven on an RBI-groundout by
Jacob Hucakaby and one in the eighth on an RBI-fielder's choice by Hagy.
Preston Budziszewski (1-3) pitched a scoreless eighth and stayed in to try to end it, but with two outs,
Taylor Petersen singled,
Zack Trygstad drew a four-pitch walk and Campbell hit a 3-2 pitch out of the park to tie the game at 5-5. Wehrli followed with a double to knock out Budziszewski.
Aaron Moore came in and, on an 0-2 pitch, allowed a walk-off single to
Tyler Follis to end the game.
That made a winner of
Reid Jungling (2-0), who pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Campbell.
Dylan Badura pitched well for the Broncs, starting game two and limiting UND to two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three in six innings.
The Broncs and UND complete this four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Game one is scheduled to last seven innings while game two is slated for the full nine.
