HOUSTON – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team snapped a 13-set losing streak to the host Houston Baptist University Huskies, but ultimately fell 3-2 on Saturday during their final match of the Marriott Houston Westchase Classic at Sharp Gym.

The Broncs dropped the first set 26-24, but picked up their first set victory since Nov. 19, 2010, 25-19 in the second. The Broncs took the third set 25-23, but the Huskies evened up the match with a 25-12 win in the fourth set. The Huskies won the decisive fifth set 15-13.

Junior Diara Reynolds and freshman Anjané Janda led the Broncs (1-2) with 11 kills each. Janda also had a team-best .310 hitting percentage. Sophomore Haley Durham recorded a match-high tying five blocks with 10 kills. Junior Nycole Masaki posted a team-high 36 assists and junior Nausheen Merchant recorded a team-best 20 digs.

Freshman Alisha Watson earned all-tournament team honors after recording 19 kills (1.58 per set), a team-high five aces, 28 digs (2.33 per set) and six blocks (0.50 per set).

Four Huskies (2-1) reached double-figures in kills, led by Megan McStavick, who recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs. Jessica Wooten and Madeline Gaffney had 13 kills each. Caiti Wenger finished with 12 kills. Kayla Armer recorded a match-high 50 assists and Haley Mueller posted a match-best 23 digs.

The Broncs held the lead for most of the first set, although never by more than four points. The Broncs got to set point at 24-22 after a Reynolds kill, but kills by McStravick and Wooten tied it up, and the Huskies won the set after a pair of attack errors by Durham.

The second set was close in the early going as well, but with the set tied at 11-11, kills by Watson, Durham and Reynolds sparked a 9-1 run as the Broncs pulled away to tie the match a 1-1.

The Huskies had an early 11-6 lead in the third set, but the Broncs came back to take a 16-15 lead on an ace by redshirt sophomore Macey Singleton. After a Durham kill, Singleton came up with another ace to put the Broncs up by three. The Broncs led by as many as four at 21-17 on a block by Durham and Masaki before holding on to take a 2-1 lead.

The Huskies scored the first five points of the fourth set and never looked back while tying the match at 2-2.

The Huskies scored the first four points of the fifth set as well, but after a timeout, the Broncs scored four-straight to tie the set. The set stayed tight from there, with the Broncs taking a 12-11 lead after an Armer service error. The Huskies scored three-straight points on attack errors, and then, after making a service error to give the Broncs the serve down 14-13, the Huskies won it on a Broncs service error.

The Broncs are back in action on Monday at 1 p.m. when they visit Lamar.
