CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders 3-0 on Friday at Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders (7-6) took the first set 25-14, the second set 25-18 and the third set 25-19.
Redshirt junior
Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs (9-5) with seven kills on 16 attacks with one error for a team-best .375 hitting percentage. Senior
Nycole Masaki had a team-high 23 assists. Junior
Naushen Merchant recorded a team-high 20 digs. Sophomore
Haley Durham and Kliefoth each had a team-high three blocks.
Ivy Baresh led the Islanders with a match-high 16 kills on 31 attacks with just two errors for a .452 hitting percentage.
Logen Bourque had the highest hitting percentage of the match at .889, coming up with eight kills on nine attacks without an error. Bourque also had a match-high 34 assists.
Hailey King had a match-high 21 digs.
The Broncs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set thanks in-part to kills by Kliefoth and freshman
Alisha Watson. The Islanders came back to tie the set at 5-5 on a Bourque kill, but Durham responded with a kill of her own to give the Broncs a 6-5 lead. The set stayed close over the next few serves, but after the Broncs tied it at 12-12 on an attack error by
Megan Olivarez, the Islanders scored six-straight points as part of a 13-2 run to close the set.
The second set was tight early as well, with the Broncs taking their largest lead at 6-4 after a 3-0 run that include a kill by freshman
Anjané Janda. The Islanders used another 6-0 run to take the lead, and the Broncs never got closer than three for the rest of the set.
The Islanders jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set, but kills by Durham and Kliefoth, followed by an ace by Merchant brought the Broncs within two. The Islanders scored the next three to go up by five, but the Broncs scored the following three to get within 13-11. The Islanders responded with a 4-1 run and the Broncs never get closer than three for the rest of the match.
The Broncs return home to face Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Admission is complimentary. Doors open at 2 p.m.
