CONWAY, Arkansas – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team swept the Jackson State University Tigers 3-0 in their first match of the Sugar Bear Classic on Friday at the Prince Center.

The Broncs (3-2) jumped out to 3-0 lead after a block by Maria Kliefoth and Krysta Freitas. Later in the first set, a kill by Haley Durham gave UTPA the 10-4 lead. Kliefoth and Durham closed out the set with back-to-back kills giving the Broncs the 25-16 first set victory.

After falling behind early in the second set, the Broncs tied it at three after a block by Nycole Masaki and Durham. The Broncs then went on an 8-2 gaining the 11-5 lead. The Tigers (0-4) closed UTPA's lead to 15-13 but the Broncs answered with a 10-4 run capped by Anjane Janada's kill giving them the 25-17 second set victory.

In the third set, Freitas got the scoring started with a kill and then Masaki followed with an ace giving the Broncs the 2-0 lead. The Tigers tied the set at five but the Broncs regained the lead with a kill from Diara Reynolds. Later in the set, a kill by Kliefoth made it 18-12 and then later closed out the third set with another kill giving them the 25-21 victory.

Maria Kliefoth recorded 10 kills to lead the Broncs offense. Nycole Masaki paced the Broncs with 39 assists and adding six digs and two blocks. Krysta Freitas led the defense with 11 digs and added five kills and a block.

Tamisha Barry, who recorded six kills, led the Tigers' offense. Jenna Siddiqui paced their offense with 21 assists while Paige Williams and Kiersten Howard both recorded seven digs for Jackson State.

The Broncs return to action this afternoon at 4 p.m. when they face the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions at the Prince Center.
