SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team fell to the defending Western Athletic Conference Champion Seattle University Redhawks 84-62 on Saturday at the Connolly Center.
Freshman
Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (7-9, 1-2 WAC) with 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-6 from behind the arc, plus 4-of-4 from the line, with three steals. Senior captain
LaQuita Garner scored a season-high nine points while going 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
Sylvia Shephard, a member of the Preseason All-WAC First Team, led three Redhawks (8-9, 3-1 WAC) in double-figures scoring with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc, plus 4-of-4 from the line, with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Kacie Sowell, a fellow member of the first team and Preseason WAC Player of the Year, scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting with five rebounds.
Ashley Ward added 10 points.
The Broncs had the lead on three different occasions in the opening minutes, as a Goff layup made it 2-0, a
Cherrell Price three made it 5-2, and a
T'Ondria Nolen layup made it 8-6.
The Broncs were within 12-10 after a
Brittany Bush layup with 15:13 remaining, but an
Alexis Montogmery three-pointer kicked off a 9-0 run that saw the Redhawks go up 21-10.
A three brought the Broncs back within single figures, but Shephard hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 17-2 run that saw the Redhawks push their lead back into double-figures for the rest of the game.
The Broncs return to the UTPA Fieldhouse for a three game home stand on Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Kansas City. Doors open at 6.
