Women's Basketball Rolls Past Kansas City

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 65-50 victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
Freshman Shawnte' Goff led the Broncs (8-9, 2-2 WAC) with 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Junior Jasmine Thompson scored 13 points with seven rebounds (five offensive). Junior Brittany Bush scored eight points with a team-high 13 rebounds.
 
Kim Nezianya and Eilise O'Connor led the Kangaroos (6-11, 2-2 WAC) with 19 points each. Nezianya also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
 
The Broncs jumped out to a 9-2 lead on a pair of baskets by Goff, one by Bush and a three by sophomore Alexandria Hill.
 
The Broncs held the Kangaroos without a field goal over the first seven minutes, keeping them 0-for-9.
 
The Broncs pushed their lead into double-figures for the first time at 15-5 on a Goff layup midway through the first half, and then their lead grew to a game-high 19 at 31-12 with four minutes left on a Hill three-pointer.
 
The Kangaroos got back into it by hitting six of their next nine shots while holding the Broncs 1-for-11 during a 16-4 run that saw the Broncs' lead drop to seven at 35-28 early in the second half.
 
The Kangaroos got as close as five at 44-39 with 8:42 remaining when two free throws by O'Connor capped a 9-2 run, but the Broncs outscored the Kangaroos 21-11 over the final 8:35 to pull away for the win.
 
The Broncs continue this three-game home stand on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Chicago State. Doors open at 6.
