Men's Basketball Falls in WAC Opener

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 91-85 on Thursday in the Western Athletic Conference Opener at Grand Canyon University Arena.
 
Junior Shaquille Boga led four Broncs (4-11, 0-1 WAC) in double-figures scoring with a career-high 25 points on a career-high nine field goals in a career-high 19 attempts with a career-high eight rebounds, six assists and three steals. Graduate student Javorn Farrell also scored 25 points, a new season-high which tied his career-high, while tying his career-high with nine field goals in 15 attempts to go with three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore Shaquille Hines scored 12 points and senior Justin Leathers scored 11 points.
 
All five Antelopes (6-8, 1-0 WAC) starters reached double-figures in scoring, accounting for 89 points, led by Killian Larson, who scored 26 points with 12 rebounds. Jerome Garrison scored 24 points with four rebounds and six assists. Daniel Alexander scored 18 points with six rebounds and four assists. Blake Davis scored 11 points with five rebounds and three assists. Akachi Okugo scored 10 points with five assists and two steals.
 
The game was tight for the first 11 and a half minutes, with the Broncs within 24-21, but a pair of Larson baskets powered a 9-2 run that saw the Antelopes go up 33-23. Senior Josh Cleveland hit three layups as the Broncs responded with an 11-2 run to pull within 35-34 with 1:49 left in the half.
 
The Antelopes outscored the Broncs 27-13 over the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 64-49 lead. The Broncs responded with a 12-3 run and that included a jumper and a three-pointer by Farrell to pull within 67-61, but the Antelopes scored the next seven points to push their lead back into double-figures.
 
Leathers hit a three-pointer with 5:35 left, and that sparked a 22-10 run that saw the Broncs pull within 84-83 on a Farrell three-point play with 51 seconds to go, but Garrison hit a three-pointer near the end of the ensuing shot clock to make it a two possession game for the rest of the way.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they visit Texas A&M in a game that can be seen live on Fox Sports Southwest.
