EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team beat the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 60-58 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in the first Western Athletic Conference game in program history.
The Broncs (7-7, 1-0 WAC) beat an Antelopes (11-3, 0-1 WAC) that entered the game ranked 25
th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll and leading the WAC in winning percentage.
It was the Broncs' first win in a conference with an automatic qualifier (AQ) into the NCAA Tournament since Feb. 24, 1997, and their first home win in an AQ conference since Feb. 15, 1997, both of which were Sun Belt Conference victories over Lamar.
Freshman
Shawnte' Goff led four Broncs in double-figures scoring with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Sophomore
Alexandria Hill scored a career-high 12 points with a career-high two steals. Junior
Jasmine Thompson scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Junior
Cherrell Price scored a career-high tying 10 points with four rebounds.
Asha McDonnell led the Antelopes with 17 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
Kaitlyn Petersen scored 15 points with seven assists.
McDonnell scored the first four points of the game for the Antelopes, but Thompson and Goff hit three-pointers to bookend a 10-0 run that saw the Broncs take the lead four minutes into the game.
The Broncs pushed their lead into double-figures for the first time at 26-15 at the 9:07 mark after back-to-back threes from NBA range by Hill.
The Broncs took their largest lead of 13 points on three occasions, first on a free throw by
Tonisha Walker and then on layups by Walker, the second of which made it 41-29 with 18 minutes to go.
Midway through the half, the Antelopes went on a 14-0 run to take a 55-53 lead with 5:04 remaining, but a Price jumper tied it and a Walker three gave the Broncs the lead for good.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. when they visit Idaho.
