EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team beat the New Mexico State University Aggies 66-61 to improve to 10-9 and tie for the best 19-game start in program history on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The only other time the Broncs (10-9, 4-2 WAC) were 10-9 was 2008-09, when they went 11-9 before dropping their 21
st game. If the Broncs win their next two games, they will have the best record through 21 games in program history.
With the win, the Broncs break a tie with the Aggies (6-13, 3-3 WAC) while remaining tied with Bakersfield (9-8, 4-2 WAC) for third place in the WAC. The Broncs play Bakersfield on Saturday on the back-end of their upcoming two-game road trip.
It was also the Broncs' first-ever win against the Aggies, improving to 1-4 all-time.
Junior
Jasmine Thompson led the Broncs with 14 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal. Junior
Tonisha Walker scored 12 points. Freshman
Shawnte' Goff finished with nine points, a career-high 11 rebounds, a career-high seven assists and one block. Junior
Brittany Bush scored six points with 10 rebounds (six offensive) and two blocks.
Danesia Williamson led the Aggies with 30 points on 10-of-25 shooting, including 6-of-11 from behind the arc, plus 4-of-5 from the line.
Sasha Weber scored 17 points.
Tyler Ellis grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Broncs led 7-5 in the opening minutes, but Williamson bookended a 16-1 run with three-pointers to put the Aggies up 21-8 with 12:29 remaining. The Aggies led by as many as 14 two minutes later on a Williamson layup.
The Broncs responded with a 17-9 run to pull within 30-25 on a pair of
T'Ondria Nolen free throws with 3:46 left in the half, but Williamson hit two threes and
Elena Holguin hit one in less than a minute to push the Aggies lead back to 14.
Junior
Cherrell Price responded with a three to kick-off a 15-2 run that was capped by a Walker three early in the second half as the Broncs pulled within 41-40.
The Aggies pushed their lead back out to three possessions, and led 69-62 after a pair of Williamson free throws with seven minutes left, but Price hit a three and then sophomore
KaeLynn Boyd and Nolen nailed layups to tie the game. After a Williamson jumper put the Aggies back on top, Boyd tied the game with two free throws and Walker gave the Broncs the lead for good with a free throw as the Broncs closed the game on a 14-2 run.
The Broncs hit the road for their next two contests, starting Thursday at 8 p.m. at Utah Valley.
