Men's Basketball Falls to Utah Valley

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 67-53 on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
 
Junior Shaquille Boga led the Broncs (6-16, 2-5 WAC) with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, with four assists and two steals. Sophomore Shaquille Hines also reached double-figures with 12 points, on 6-of-10 shooting, and six rebounds.
 
Mitch Bruneel led the Wolverines (13-7, 7-0 WAC) with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with four rebounds and three steals. Holton Hunsaker scored 15 points and Keawe Enos scored 14 points.
 
The Broncs scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Boga. The Wolverines scored nine of the next 10 points to take the lead, but the Broncs were still within 11-9 after a Hines layup with 9:19 remaining in the first half.
 
The Wolverines followed with a 19-5 run to go up 30-14 seven minutes later.
 
The Wolverines extended their lead to 40-23 on a layup by Bruneel early in the second half, but a pair of free throws and a three-point play by senior Justin Leathers brought the Broncs within 12.
 
The Broncs got within nine at 51-42 on a layup by graduate student Javorn Farrell with 9:51 to go, and then, after a Zach Nelson layup, 53-44 on a Hines layup.
 
The Wolverines scored 11-straight points over the following three and a half minutes on a pair of threes by Hunsaker, one by Enos and a jumper by Bruneel to push the game out of reach.
 
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Bakersfield. Doors open at 6.
