OREM, Utah – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game while tying for the best 20-game start in program history, 64-54 over the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Thursday at the UCCU Center.
The only other time the Broncs (11-9, 5-2 WAC) were 11-9 was 2008-09. If the Broncs win at Bakersfield on Saturday at 3 p.m., they will have the best record through 21 games in program history.
The Broncs held the Wolverines (4-16, 1-6 WAC) to 28.8 percent shooting, marking the fifth time this season the Broncs have held an opponent under 30 percent, and the first time they have done so in a true road game.
Sophomore
KaeLynn Boyd led the Broncs with 17 points, three assists and two steals. Freshman
Shawnte' Goff scored 15 points with five rebounds and two assists. Junior
Brittany Bush grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds (seven offensive). Junior
Jasmine Thompson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Rebecca MaWhinney led the Wolverines with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Rhaiah Knight-Spooner scored 14 points with seven rebounds.
The Broncs jumped out to a 9-2 lead on a pair of Boyd free throws, a Goff jumper, a
Cherrell Price three and a Bush layup.
The Wolverines responded with an 11-3 run to take their first lead at 13-12 on a MaWhinney three-pointer eight minutes into the game.
The game was tight for the next few minutes, but with the Broncs down 21-20, Goff hit a three and then three free throws to kick-off an 11-0 run that saw the Broncs go up 31-21 near the end of the half.
The Wolverines climbed within 42-40 on a pair of Spooner-Knight free throws with 7:35 left, but a Boyd jumper started a 12-2 run that saw the Broncs go up 56-44 with two minutes left, pushing the game out of reach.
