Men's Basketball Hangs Tough Before Falling at Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team played the Texas A&M University Aggies tight, but the Aggies closed the game on a 17-3 run to beat the Broncs 63-46 on Saturday at Reed Arena.
 
Senior Justin Leathers led the Broncs (4-12) with 13 points while hitting a career-high four three-pointers and grabbing a team-high tying seven rebounds. He also had a season-high and team-high three steals. Sophomore Shaquille Hines also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points with seven rebounds.
 
Jamal Jones led three Aggies (9-4) in double-figures scoring with 16 points and six rebounds. Alex Caruso scored 13 points with six assists, three blocks and four steals. Fabyon Harris scored 10 points. Kourtney Roberson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds (four offensive).
 
The Aggies led 15-7 out of the gate, thanks in-part to two three-pointers by Harris and one by Jones. Leathers used three-pointers to bookend an 8-0 run that saw the Broncs tie the game at 15-15. After a Shawn Smith layup gave the Aggies the lead back, junior Shaquille Boga made a jumper to tie the game at 17-17. Caruso followed with a layup, but Leathers nailed his third three of the game to give the Broncs their first lead at 20-19 with 5:24 left in the first half.
 
The Aggies scored the next 13 points to build a 12-point lead, and they stayed ahead by at least three possessions until a Hines layup brought the Broncs within 44-39 with 13:53 remaining. The Broncs pulled to within 46-43 on a pair of free throws by Hurley Johnson two and a half minutes later, but that's as close as they got.
 
The Broncs resume Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday at 7 p.m. when the host Idaho in the conference home opener at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 6.
