Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball beat the Chicago State University Cougars 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18) on Thursday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
Redshirt senior
Maria Kliefoth led the Broncs (5-15, 2-4 WAC) with 13 kills on .478 hitting on four blocks. Junior
Haley Durham finished with 12 kills on .308 hitting and five blocks. Sophomore
Alisha Watson had 12 kills. Freshman
Mary Kate Clark dished out 38 assists. Three Broncs reached double-figures in digs, as seniors
Krysta Freitas and
Nausheen Merchant had 11 each while redshirt junior
Macey Singleton posted 10.
Milica Zmiric led the Cougars (6-14, 0-6 WAC) with 10 kills.
Sarah Metcalfe had 31 assists.
Julia Menhart posted 25 digs.
Essence Jackson-Jones finished with six blocks.
The Cougars took the early lead in the first set, going up 6-2 on a Menhart ace. The Cougars led 10-7 on a
Selene Newell kill, but a kill by sophomore
Anjané Janda was the first of three-straight points for the Broncs as they tied the set. The Broncs took their first lead on the second of back-to-back kills by Kliefoth that made it 12-11. Then, with the set tied at 14, a Watson kill sparked a 6-1 run as the Broncs pulled away for a 1-0 lead.
The Broncs scored the first three points of the second set before going up 8-4 on a Durham kill. The Cougars pulled within 13-14 on an attack error, but the Broncs responded with a 7-1 run en route to a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set, going up by as many as six at 9-3, 11-5 and 12-6. Down 8-13, The Broncs used a kill by Kliefoth, two by senior
Diara Reynolds and an attack error to pull within two. The Broncs got within one for the first time at 17-18 on an attack error, and then tied it for the first time at 19-19 on an attack error. The set was tied at 23-23 before a kill by
Ellie Woinowsky and an attack error sent the match to a fourth set.
The Broncs responded by exploding out of the gate in the fourth set, going up 6-1 on a Watson kill, 10-3 on a Kliefoth ace, and 15-4 on a Janda kill. The Cougars got as close as four at 16-20, but the Broncs scored five of the final seven points to end the match.
The Broncs are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Kansas City at the UTPA Fieldhouse. Doors open at 12.
