Box ScoreEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs volleyball team fell to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos 3-0 (10-25, 18-25, 16-25) on Saturday at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
The Broncs (5-16, 2-5 WAC) were led by redshirt senior
Maria Kliefoth, who had six kills and seven blocks, and senior
Diara Reynolds, who had six kills and four blocks.
Emily Hagedorn led the Kangaroos (18-3, 6-0 WAC) with nine kills and six blocks.
Kaylyn Brandt had a match-high 17 assists while
Taryn Miller posted a match-high 19 digs.
The Kangaroos led wire-to-wire in the first set, although it was close early, as the Broncs were within 2-3 on a kill by sophomore
Anjané Janda, 3-4 on a bad set by
Nicole Wemhoff, and 4-5 on a kill by Reynolds, but the Kangaroos used a 14-2 run to go up 19-7 and pull away for a 1-0 lead.
The Broncs took their first lead on the opening serve of the second set, as Kliefoth came up with a kill. A kill by
Sydney Crimmins sandwiched attack errors as the Kangaroos scored the next three points to take the lead, but a Reynolds kill kept the Broncs within one. The Kangaroos went up by as many as 11 at 19-8 on a
Jessica Hendin ace, but a pair of kills by junior
Haley Durham powered a 5-0 run as the Broncs pulled within six. The Broncs were still within six at 18-24 when a service error ended the set.
The Broncs scored the first point of the third set as well on a block by Kliefoth and Reynolds. After the Kangaroos scored the next five points, the Broncs responded with a 4-0 run that was capped by three-straight blocks from Kliefoth, Reynolds and sophomore
Alisha Watson to tie the set. The Broncs kept it close, as they were within 9-10 on a Janda kill before the Kangaroos scored 15 of the final 22 points to complete the sweep.
The Broncs are back in action on Thursday at 8 p.m. when they visit Grand Canyon.
